Caryl Pierson, Moving With Math ®  principal author, using manipulatives to teach place value with some students.

Q.  "Why should I use manipulatives to teach my child math?  I learned by memorizing."

Recent research shows that children taught with manipulatives score higher on achievement tests, understand their math better and become better problem solvers!

Memorization is important, but it should not take place until the child understands what he is learning.  For example, when a student uses manipulatives to show "3 groups of 4", he understands multiplication as "putting together groups of equal size" and ready to use strategies or thinking patterns to begin memorizing 3x4=12.

Q.  How can I learn to use manipulatives?

The user friendly Teacher Guides provide step-by-step instructions for using manipulatives in each lesson.  Illustrations in the Student Book reinforce the activities.  No previous experience is necessary.  An overview video showing important manipulative activities at each grade level is available.

Q.  What features make Moving with Math different from other programs?

Moving with Math is unique because of its balanced approach linking the use of manipulatives with practice and problem solving.  An easy assessment program with pre- and post-tests and daily reviews lets parents know at all times what their child knows.  Students use thinking strategies to help them memorize basic facts.  This is a complete program covering all essential objectives from K-8.  The objectives have a nearly 100% match to state and national achievement tests.

Q.  Which level should I buy?

Administer the diagnostic partial pre-test found on this web site.  Determine your child's curriculum level from the results of the test.  If in doubt, purchase the program from the higher level as you will be using it eventually.

Q.  How do I know which program to buy in Grades 1 and 2?

The Multi-Grade Program and the Primary Program for Grades 1 &2 teach the same objectives in the same way -- manipulatives followed by practice.  They both use teacher guides with games, pre- and post-tests, daily reviews and re-teaching pages.  The Primary Program uses and inter-disciplinary approach with reference to other curriculum such as art and children's stories.  There is one student book for each grade.  The Multi-Grade Program teachers only math and the objectives are divided among several books.

If you have already used Level A (Multi-Grade) with your child and it worked well, stay with the Multi-Grade Program.  If you began with the Kindergarten (Primary) Program, stay with the Primary Program through grades 1 and 2 to continue the same interdisciplinary approach.  Click on the Multi-Grade Overview and the Primary Overview to select the program that best meets the needs of you and your child.

Here's what the experts have to say about Moving with Math ®

"This program has several benefits. It introduces concepts with manipulatives, it emphasizes problem-solving activities and thinking skills.  Pre-tests help you keep track of objectives and teaches necessities rather than wasting time on busy work...  The cost is very reasonable.  Moving with Math offers much more flexibility than any other in terms of designing the program to fit your child's needs."
Cathy Duffy-Christian Home Educator's Curriculum Manual

"Math Teachers Press provides a balance between teaching with manipulatives and following up with pencil/paper.  I highly recommend the user friendly teacher guides which have saved me planning time and helped me think mathematically."
Gayle Graham - How to Home School

"This program is the best I've seen!  It is diagnostic (helps you determine what your child does not know),  prescriptive (gives you what you need to teach missing skills), and systematic (builds logically on previously learned concepts)."
Joyce Herzog - Choosing Curriculum

"This is the best designed math course based on math manipulatives I have seen.  They don't teach you anything  without "showing" you how it works with real-world objects."
Mary Pride - Practical Home Schooling

What home school parents are saying...

I want you to know how much we enjoy your curriculum!  I have taught for many years in several school systems, public and private, and have never seen a program so beneficial and enjoyable for the students.  Thank you!
