ELL PD Materials: Small teddy bear counters (or Master 12), wrapped candies (optional) Vocabulary: more WhoHasMore? Put out a pile of about 15 small teddy bear counters in themiddle of a circle of students. Name two students and ask each of them to take a handful of small bears. Encourage students to guess. How do you think the number of bears Student A has compares to the number of bears Student B has? Who has more bears? How can we find out? Put the bears in front of you andmatch bears, one by one, until one person has no bears left. Ask the question again and have a student describe her answer. (Student A hadmore bears than Student B becausewhen one bear from each personwasmatched together, student A still had bears left.) Repeat so that each student has an opportunity to take a handful andmatch bears with a partner. If the partners have the same number, students should respond that neither person hasmore or that they both have the same number because the bearsmatched exactly and therewere no leftovers. On this page, childrenwill use teddy bear counters tomake a group on the right card that has onemore bear than the picture of bears on the left card. Point to the picture of bears on the left card and the blank cards in the top row. Place 1 bear on top of each picture. Pause. Nowmove your bears to the blank card on the right. How does the number of bears compare to the picture? How do you know? (it is the same because I just moved them)Model the activity by pointing to the first set of bears and putting bear counters on the left side of the page.Watch as students complete the taskwith you. Now add one bear on the right so there is one more bear counter than pictures of bears. Demonstrate. Now how does the number of teddy bear counters compare to the number of pictures of bears on the left? How do you know? (first Imatched the bears to the pictures and then I added 1more) Draw a picture of the number of bears you have placed on the right card. Repeat the instructions for the cards in the middle row and the bottom row. Musical Chairs Play the gameMusical Chairs in which there is always onemore child than there are chairs. Give each student some small objects (e.g. wrapped candies or bear counters).Make sure to give 1 student in each pairmore than the other student. Look at the candies (bears) you have and the candies (bears) your partner has. Was I fair when I passed out the candies (bears)? How can you tell?
