GradeK 36 IntroducingAddition: OneMore Objective K-26: To introduce the concept of addition at the concrete level by joining onemore to a number, telling andwriting howmany there are in the set. PD Materials: Teddy bear counters (orMaster 12), Number Stair, Teddy Bear Storyboard (Master 9), Numeral Cards 1–6 (Masters 3 and 4), tagboard, glue, crayons Read toMe: One Gorilla, Morozumi, Atsuko. (See page xiii of foreword for the related activity.) Preparing aTeddyBear Storyboard Each student or small groupwill need a copy ofMaster 9, teddy bear counters andNumeral Cards 1–6 (Masters 3 and 4). Have children glue the picture of the sandbox on a sheet of tagboard and color, or copyMaster 9 on cardstock and have children color it. Use the Teddy Bear Storyboard to assess number-numeral matches. 1. Showme 5 teddy bears in the sandbox. 2. Display 5 teddy bears. Howmany bears are there? Find a Numeral Card tomatch the number of bears. Notewhich children need further practice and onwhich numbers. Exploring theAdditionProcess After students are able tomatchwritten and spoken numbers with numerals, they should use the Teddy Bear Storyboard tomake up, act out, and retell stories with teddy bear counters. Use number stories related to the addition facts with sums up to 6. Begin by telling the story and demonstrating the story for the children. Then ask students to take turns as they retell the story to a partner and show the action. Tell the story andmodel it on the Teddy Bear Storyboard. It was a beautiful sunny day and 3 teddy bears were playing in the sandbox. One more teddy bear came to join them. Then there were 4 bears in the sandbox. It is very important that every child can retell this story to be sure they understand “putting together” or “joining” as the underlying concept of addition. When you have listened to each child successfully create and retell a story, ask a volunteer to tell a story for the rest of the class to follow. Keep a record in your class book of the storytellers. Be sure that every child has an opportunity to tell a story about the joining process. These problems involve adding onemore to a number. Have students act out each story using teddy bear counters placed onTeddy Bear Storyboards. Have the children tell the story, say the answer aloud, and thenwrite the numerals in the spaces. After each story has been acted out, write the numerals from the story on the board. For example, after the first storywas acted out, you wouldwrite a 3, 1, and 4 on the board and say that this was a story about 3, 1, and 4. Show the same numbers on aNumber Stair. Point to 3. Count up 1more. Howmuch is 3 and 1 more? Repeat with each story. 36 ©MathTeachersPress, Inc.Reproduction by anymeans is strictly prohibited. One More Lesson 12, KETeacherGuide 36 K.OA.1, K.OA.2
