Manipulative-BasedRTI Solutions for over 40 Years! Sean Healy – Lead Teacher RISE Program, Jersey City, New Jersey BACKGROUND Jersey City is the second largest city in New Jersey with a very diverse population. The Special Education Department needed consistent, engaging and easy-to-use intervention programs for their students who were performing significanly below grade level and support for their teachers, especially those who were less familiar with teaching math. Jersey City’s goal was to close the achievement gap and encourage greater inclusion in a less restrictive environment. They set out to find a curriculum that included: • High quality Assessments that provided Actionable Diagnostic Information • Easy-to-follow plans with Effective Lessons • Flexibility, Accountability and Professional Development Support for Teachers RESULTS They chose the Moving with Math program and for five years they have seen great results. Speaking at the 2017 National Title 1 Conference, he shared that their 2,600 special education students improved 24% on an independent assessment and they were the 2nd highest performing large district on the state’s PARCC assessment. Only Elizabeth, NJ was higher and they also use the Moving with Math programs! When asked about their success he quoted his teachers “ Moving with Math provides concrete activities for difficult concepts in an easy to understand format. Students learn to represent and model the abstract math to promote deeper understanding.” These carefully designed manipulative activities are key to building student understanding of number sense, patterns and relationships, the critical concepts necessary to raise achievement.
